Home Solar Power Systems - 8 Great Reasons it is Becoming So Popular!

By Jim W Carter

Environmental protection is a subject that we hear and read about nearly every day. The process of starting to go green is moving forward. Society as a whole is growing more conscience of environmental concerns. One of the more popular topics on this subject is home solar power systems.

Solar energy is a great alternative to the fossil fuels which we have been using for many years. The fuels that most people use today, oil and coal specifically, put pollutants into the air, and the portion of it that is used is gone forever.

Let's look at some of the reasons that solar power electricity has become such a popular alternative source of power.

1. Solar energy is a renewable form of energy that can be used for all time. The sun has always shown and will always shine, at least that is Mother Nature's plan, as far as anyone knows.

2. Home solar power systems electricity technology is becoming more available all of the time. Scientist and engineers are making discoveries most every day which makes solar electric panels technology more available to us, the public.

3. Solar electricity is clean; it produces absolutely no by-products which are harmful to the environment.

4. The equipment used to provide solar electricity for residential use is solar panels which uses photovoltaic (PV) technology to produce electricity.

5. Solar panels are noiseless power plants. No moving parts. Low maintenance cost. Residential solar energy is proven to work.

6. Thousands of people across this great country and around the world use solar power electricity every day.

7. The electricity produced this way can be used to do the same things that conventionally produced power is used for. Solar energy can light, heat and cool our houses. It can operate your appliances and all the gadgets and gizmos that you use every day.

8. There are numerous ways to implement home solar power systems. Other than new contractor installed systems, used solar panels are more available. On the internet you can find several great instruction manuals with step-by-step guidebooks as well as solar power kits.

Solar power electricity is becoming easier to implement. There are great new products with instructions that you can purchase that will show you how to build solar panels and install them in a short amount of time. The materials that you will need can be bought for less than $200 at your local hardware store.

It is not unusual for the person who installs home solar power systems to cut hundreds of dollars per month on their bills from the power companies. Some households have saved from 50% to 80% on electricity payments.

Next, discover the most cost effective way to be introduced to the energy source of the future, solar power electricity. Environmentally Friendly Gardening - What Can You Do?

By Donna Letson

Increasing more gardeners are concerned with gardening practices that not only beautify their environments but also with ways to garden that are environmentally friendly. While old habits sometimes die hard, a concerted effort to garden without the use of chemicals is one of the bet ways a gardener can "go green". Let's look at a few of the ways that you can also be more eco-friendly with your gardening.

One big source of harm to the environment is through the overuse or misuse of pesticides and herbicides. Instead of reaching for the chemicals, there are often a number of more environmentally friendly options to take care of pests and weeds.

Hand weeding before the weeds get out of control is important and should be your first line of defense against weeds. A good thick layer of mulch will also help to eliminate many weed seeds from ever germinating and growing. Vinegar can be used as an alternative to potentially harmful chemical sprays. You will however, need to purchase vinegar that is 20% ascetic acid as household vinegar is only 5% and not strong enough to do the job except on newly sprouted weeds. There are also an increasing number of organic herbicides on the market.

Nobody hates bugs more than I do, I really don't like having them around. Having said that, I have found that most of them don't really do that much harm in the garden. Now I know there are those that do, Japanese beetles immediately come to mind and they can certainly do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. Hand picking them and dropping them into soapy water works well if you don't have a huge infestation. Traps work but you really need to have a large enough area that you can place the traps well away from your garden. Otherwise, you are actually inviting them in with the traps. Rotenone or pyrethrum sprays that are made from natural ingredients often help with Japanese beetles and other pests.

Since we, as gardeners, want our soils to be as rich and productive as possible, everything we can do to eliminate chemical use will surely benefit our gardens. Try to learn and put into practice as much as you can about natural options to get rid of weeds and insects as well as planting different varieties of plants that naturally repel many insects. Every drop of chemical that we can prevent from being used will go one step further in helping out environment.

Donna loves both working in her garden and writing about gardening. She has written on a variety of garden topics from favorite plants to ideas for garden tools storage. She also often reviews garden products and tools and shares her thoughts including her favorite pruning shears.

Food Waste and The Environment

By Jesse Allaria

Food waste makes up for 12 percent of our garbage, and it is a direct contributor to green house gas production, it is very expensive to transport, and it is very easy to manage it at home with simple changes of habits.

As mentioned before, cooking less and learning to eat left-overs, are very simple to achieve. But when there is an excess in food that wont get eaten for whatever reason, composting it might be the answer. The reality is that we can compost anywhere and almost anything. kitchen scraps are great for creating rich useful compost for the garden.

There are many ways to compost kitchen products, some of them don't include meat or grease. Anyone who is interested in composting would study the different practices and choose the one that makes more sense for them. Along with kitchen scraps other decomposing products like milk, may accelerate the composting process, and one may add unused paper and cardboard to the practice.

Home composting does not only applies to food, but one can add autumn leafs and other litter like pet waste and other materials. If a home owner is practicing pet waste composting the compost product will be great for flower garden fertilizers, but not for vegetable and edible plants.

Compost product is a great soil conditioner and it should be use in combination with the existent soil. It is good practice to turn the soil every season around the plants to let oxygenation, water and fertilizers go deep in the plants roots and soil.

Learning to eat better, and introducing more vegetables and fruits to the table, also helps with the disposal of it's waste, should there be any waste. Vegetable and fruit scraps have a higher decomposition rate than oil, grease and meats. And changing our food habits may help lowering some related health problems issues, that affect parts of the population.

A consideration of food shortages in other parts of the world should be a number one reason to stop our food wasting habits, hunger around the world is not something of a laughing matter. Buy only what would be eaten, and taking out of our grocery shopping list the products that are not being consumed, is a priority for most of us. This practice will not only help reducing food waste, but it will lower the food cost per family and contribute to better health overall.

Composting, better eating habits, better food shopping habits is the answer to food waste stopage, and beneficial to health problems. Grow something as well, it will not only benefit your health, but will provide you with a better knowledge of survival and nature.
